The Little Commander

The Little Commander

There is not enough time in the world to savor the blonde wisps
To watch and witness the explorer’s mind grow
To hear him yell his favorite flavor of ice cream at the top of his lungs,
All while he chases the dogs around the house with a broom
A vibrant, large life in a small body
Running full force nonstop
The new word is no, which I am sure I will hear over and over again
As he rises into a powerful force of a man and eclipses me
As he grows into his feet, and his fumbling limbs start to match his unrelenting mind
I hope that he realizes that I am his father, and I love him so
I know that there are other influences in his life, and there always will be
I do not want him to forget the bond,
The same bond that happens when he curls up in my arms, wrapping himself around me
So secure and attached
A father is not a fickle friend
He does not break loose
I will be here for you every time, always with you
Even the size of your bike will change with you
As you learn to ride, fall, and crash hard
Again, like a train with no brakes
But then I hope that gently you find your stoppers
Always coming back to me
So I can remember that little yellow head toddling and bobbling
Up and down on those bruised and scraped, knobby little boy knees
Rise up and be ever so powerful
Be brave in a gravel-faced world full of sandpaper hearts
You are loved forever
My little best friend and forever companion
Keep riding bikes, bigger and faster
Crash, and always get back up
Yell about ice cream until your heart is content
You beautiful soul
My bright sun
Never forget to laugh!
